Shedu was set up by textile artist and photographer Sheila Buchanan. Here you can order bags, hand-made from soft yarn or silk, hand-plaited belts, scarves, mobiles made of wood, shells, tree bark, beads, feathers and poems on waxed paper, original photo images in the form of greetings cards and canvases, woven designs using Swedish yarns, and much more.
The slideshow above shows a small selection from the wide range of hand-made products available from Shedu, and includes a plaited belt, a scarf, mobiles, images from greetings cards, some of Sheila's photography, and examples of woven designs as well as shots taken during the weaving process.
A textile artist and photographer, Sheila Buchanan studied on the degree course in constructed textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, Scotland, 1994—1997, graduating with a 2/1 degree in 1997. Offered the opportunity to study on the masters degree course the year she graduated, Sheila opted instead to return to special needs teaching, giving art classes through Elmwood College in Fife. Having already worked with adults with special needs for eight years, Sheila has now returned to this kind of work part time through the ‘re.create’ programme.
Sheila runs re.create at the Salvation Army Community Hall, 77 South Street, Perth. Re.create offers creative classes and workshops in Art, Music, Drama, Poetry, and Writing, primarily for special needs adults but open to anyone who wouldn't otherwise have access to these kinds of classes. For more information on re.create contact Sheila on (01738) 443605.
Sheila is happy to travel out to give workshops or classes in art and to take on commissions for her own work from this website.
For all queries regarding orders, commissions, workshops and classes, please email Sheila at or telephone 01738 443605 or (mobile) 079 180 369 65.
Music is one of Sheila's other passions, along with writing poetry. She has composed instrumental pieces on the keyboard, while some of her poems have become songs with guitar accompaniment. A two-track demo CD has been recorded with her friend Yaatri (composer and sound engineer) of Brainheart music based in Perth. Sheila studied for three months at HNC level on the music performance course at Perth college. She has a strong wish to record a CD entitled Hidden Angels, hopefully with Yaatri, and would be happy to connect with other musicians. To listen to an extract from Sheila's demo, choose from one of the download options below.
Poetry is a recurring theme in much of Sheila's work. Her poems are often found printed on silk bags or waxed paper, and are sometimes used in her weavings.
Below we have reproduced one of Sheila's poems.
